How we analyze
BeautySift does not run a clinical lab. We aggregate verifiable public sources — Sephora and Ulta verified reviews, Reddit community sentiment, peer-reviewed studies (PubMed / JID / JAMA Derm), brand-published clinical data, and editorial coverage from Allure, Byrdie, NYT Wirecutter, and Dermstore — into evidence-weighted recommendations.
Why a meta-analyst, not a tester
A single 15-person panel produces noisy results. The internet already contains thousands of verified reviews and dozens of editorial assessments for any popular product. Our job is to weight, reconcile, and synthesize that data into an honest recommendation — faster and more transparently than any one tester could.
Source weighting
| Source type | Default weight | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Peer-reviewed studies (PubMed) | 9–10 | Highest evidentiary standard |
| FDA clearances / 510(k) | 9 | Independent regulatory verification |
| NYT Wirecutter | 9 | Independent editorial, panel-tested, no advertorials |
| Allure / Byrdie / Dermstore Editorial | 7–8 | Expert editorial; mild brand-relationship bias |
| Sephora / Ulta verified reviews (≥50) | 6–8 | Large sample size, verified purchase |
| Reddit r/SkincareAddiction (≥50 upvotes) | 5–7 | Community sentiment, lower verification |
| Brand-funded clinical studies | 5–6 | Possible selection bias — capped |
| TikTok / influencer claims | 0–3 | Mostly promotional |
Scoring rubric (0–10 per dimension)
| Dimension | Weight | What we measure |
|---|---|---|
| Efficacy | 30% | Clinical evidence + % reviewers reporting target outcome |
| Formulation | 20% | INCI quality, stability, vehicle appropriateness |
| Tolerability | 15% | Inverted: irritation rate in 1–2★ reviews + Reddit reports |
| Texture | 10% | Editorial consensus + reviewer language patterns |
| Value | 10% | $/oz versus category median |
| Accessibility | 10% | Number of authorized US retailers |
| Evidence | 5% | Strength of clinical-claim backing |
